El Huerto

We have had a great time over the past few weeks getting to know some of the youth here.  On Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from about 6-9 in the evenings, the outside courtyard of our home is opened to jr. high and high school students.  It is called “El Huerto” and is designed to be a safe place for youth to come and hang out and be together.  On Thursday evenings, they do a Bible Study together and have small groups.  On Friday nights, Ben and I have committed to be out there and we have started teaching them a few of our favorite games.

So far we have played “signales” or “signs” with them, and they seem to love it!  Last week we taught them “left-right-center.”

This brought a lot of good laughs.  For each game there is a consequence for the “loser”.  The first consequence was eating a spoonful of cinnamon!!

The second consequence was eating a raw egg, as evidenced below.

And the final consequence was eating half of a jalepeno pepper!!!

We’ve also enjoyed time just playing soccer or basketball together.  Our kids love to be a part of it!

In fact, the kids ask every day if the “Huerto” is coming.  And they have started looking forward to seeing the familiar faces at church on Sundays as well.  The youth are really good with our kids too!

Pray for wisdom as we continue to seek ways to reach out and invest in the youth here.  Pray that we would make the most of our time with them on Friday nights.   And pray that each time they walk through the gate they would feel the love and presence of Jesus Christ.
